The consumer magazine division of News International made a loss of almost £10m last year. (From Press Gazette) This was on revenue of a little over £12 million.  (Those figures bear repeating – for every £1 in revenue NI magazines is spending £1.83p).

“In common with other magazine groups, the company faces challenging circulation and advertising environments,” the company said. “[We are] addressing ongoing circulation challenges through regional marketing and pricing initiatives and continuous product improvement.” [Translation: ‘even with the house ads and the rep force from the newspaper group we’re not selling enough copies or getting enough adverts so we’re desperately casting around trying to find something that works even just a little bit’]

Apart from the contract for Sky Magazine (how could they possibly have won that?) and Sunday Times Travel Magazine (ditto) the only magazine they publish is Love It! (latest ABC – down 10.6% year-on-year). SkyMag will make money for them next year, but the other two titles? Let’s see if they’re still around in 12 months.
