A look at some publishers’ performance in the ABCs, starting with Future, a) because I find Stevie Spring intensely irritating and wrong-headed about nearly everything and b) because they once threatened to sue me for saying that Fast Car had closed down.
Given that title’s current ABC (just 19,000, down 27% year on year) I suspect they’re keeping it going just to spite me.
But although Fast Car is the biggest percentage faller, there’s some tough competition in the red ink stakes. Future is rapidly turning into a volume producer of small circulation magazines, a testament to Gummo’s lack of investment in print and marketing. So, of 49 titles reporting, 39 of them have circulation falls. 8 of the titles now have ABCs of under 10,000, with a further 15 under 20,000.
As well as Fast Car, stand out performances come from Redline (ABC of 9,623, down 26.9%), PC Format (9,318, down 21.8%), PC Plus (13,727, down 21.2%) and What Laptop (6,585, down 20.2%).
The Future’s bright – well, for me anyway, as there’s likely to be lots for to write about in the coming months.
