A report in this morning’s Grauniad suggests that D C Thomson are close to axing The Dandy – “the UK’s oldest comic”.

Although D C Thomson have form in using such announcements to try to boost sales, the fact that this particular comic sells just 8,000 copies an issue means that whatever happens the publication can’t be long for this world.

While more a Beano man, Private Frazer would have been tempted to shed a tear for the Dundee-based funsters, were it not for this paragraph in the Guardian report:

In the 2010 revamp a raft of celebrity-based comic strips were introduced, featuring celebrities such as Harry Hill, Cheryl Cole, Simon Cowell, Jamie Oliver and Jeremy Clarkson, in a bid to target new readers.

Have you ever read words that chill the blood so comprehensively? And would you be surprised at the fact that “sales had slumped a further 50% by the end of 2011”
